A short pilot bit for the centre of a hole saw. The pilot bites first and keeps the saw cutting on the mark instead of wandering as the teeth catch. The short length is the one to use in a tight space or against a shallow backing, where a long pilot would bottom out on whatever is behind the work before the saw teeth had finished the cut.
