A mechanical shaft seal for a pump. The seal is what keeps water in the pump body where the rotating shaft passes out of it, and it is the part that normally fails first — a pump weeping from the centre, between the motor and the volute, is a shaft seal rather than a gasket or a fitting. Replacing the seal is far cheaper than replacing the pump, but seals are matched to the pump, so identify the model before ordering.
