It protects a wet system from freezing where the pipework runs somewhere that can drop below freezing — snowmelt loops, unit heaters in unheated spaces, and any system in a building left unoccupied in winter. Use a fluid formulated for heating systems with the corrosion inhibitors included: automotive antifreeze attacks the materials in a hydronic system and is not suitable.
