A flame detection electrode. It sits in the burner flame and completes a circuit through the flame itself, which is how the control confirms that gas is actually burning rather than simply flowing. A dirty, cracked or badly positioned electrode is one of the commonest causes of an appliance that lights and then locks out seconds later. Position matters as much as the part - it has to sit in the flame, not near it.
